Should you Upgrade to El Capitan? Consider This.
I upgraded to El Capitan and it landed me in the repair shop.
Here’s the deal. Software often outpaces hardware. If you use your electronics until the bolts pop off, like I do, consider the age of your computer before upgrading the operating system.
Apparently my three year old desktop is “too old” for El Capitan OS X. Within two days, it was a dead dog. I couldn’t even restore from backup.
Apple *wants* you to run to their nearest store in distress, where you will be relieved of a few thousand dollars. The company doesn’t have more cash than the US government for mysterious reasons.
My machine is now happily rolled back to Yosemite, where it will stay until the bolts pop off.

Because I couldn’t restore from backup, it had to be wiped clean – operating system, everything – and I was afraid to do it myself so I took it to a local Mac repair shop. A day later she was back to her happy old Yosemite self and running fine. I didn’t lose a single thing thanks to a complete backup on an external drive (I also keep a backup offsite at Carbonite).
I hope you have a local Mac repair option in your area. Note that this voids your Apple warranty if you are still under one. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
